Education for Sustainable Education - ESD

Sustainability Education often referred to as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), has been defined as (UNESCO, 2014)

"Education for Sustainable Development allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary to shape a sustainable future.

Education for Sustainable Development requires far-reaching changes in the way education is often practiced today.

GEMS Legacy School believes that Sustainability Education or ESD is essential to transform the next generation into eco-conscious, self-sustaining global citizens, who understand the urgency of environmental responsibility. Although there is no ‘universally correct’ pedagogical approach to facilitate ESD in the classroom, the school realizes that the best way to do so is by shifting toward teaching-learning methods that are reflective, critical, active, participative, collaborative, experiential and inquiry-driven. The hope and aim of these pedagogical approaches are that they will motivate and empower the learner to change their behavior and consequently make a real difference in their understanding, thinking and ability to act.

Education for Sustainability Development @ GEMS Legacy School, in addition to the above-mentioned pedagogical approaches, is facilitated through dedicated GLS Climate Advocacy Committees, meticulously curated Climate Literacy Lesson Plans, well-defined Action Research Projects, and international Climate Change Conferences and Events, and local and global community-driven Sustainability Initiatives.
